Obsession Movie Production Lawsuits: 3 Hawaii Cases and What to Know
Obsession Movie Production lawsuits are federal copyright cases filed in Hawaii by Obsession Movie Production Inc. over alleged BitTorrent sharing of the 2026 horror film Obsession. If your internet provider sent you a letter about one of these cases, you are most likely still an anonymous “John Doe,” identified only by an IP address, and you have time to read calmly and get advice before anything else happens. Obsession Movie Production lawsuits follow the same John Doe process used in many other BitTorrent cases.
This guide lists the Obsession Movie Production lawsuits filed so far, explains what the court record shows, and walks through calm next steps. A consultation with Antonelli Law® is free and confidential.

Who is Obsession Movie Production Inc.?
According to its complaint, Obsession Movie Production Inc. is a California corporation and an affiliate of Capstone Studios, Corp. It says it owns the copyrights in Obsession, a supernatural psychological horror film released in 2026. In the first case, the plaintiff’s corporate disclosure also lists Capstone Studios, Corp. as an affiliate.
One spelling detail matters if you are searching for your case. The caption of the first case, 1:26-cv-00313, spells the plaintiff “Obsession Move Production Inc.” The two newer cases use “Obsession Movie Production Inc.” They are the same plaintiff, and this page treats them as one set of Obsession Movie Production lawsuits.
All three cases were filed by attorney Kerry S. Culpepper of Culpepper IP, the plaintiff’s counsel of record. For background on the affiliated company, see our partner site’s guides What is Capstone Studios? and Capstone Studios lawyer.
Obsession Movie Production lawsuits filed so far
As of November 6, 2026, we have confirmed three Obsession Movie Production lawsuits, all in the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii. Together they name 89 John Doe defendants. We list only cases we have verified as this plaintiff’s BitTorrent cases. Other court cases with “Obsession” in a party name (boats, businesses and unrelated companies) are not part of this list.

The table below lists every IP address in Exhibit 1 to each complaint, one row per Doe, with the city and internet provider shown in that exhibit. Every row lists the same single work, the film Obsession. Hit dates are shown in UTC, as in the exhibit, so a Hawaii date may be one day earlier.

IP address, city, provider and hit date details come from Exhibit 1 to each complaint. The city is the location the plaintiff associated with the IP address. It is not necessarily where any particular person lives, and an IP address alone does not show who used an internet connection. If your letter lists one of these docket numbers, it is about one of the Obsession Movie Production lawsuits above. We will update this page as new Obsession Movie Production lawsuits are filed.
What the court record shows: judges and patterns
1:26-cv-00313 (filed June 19, 2026)
- Judges: District Judge Micah W.J. Smith, with Magistrate Judge Rom Trader handling pretrial matters.
- Early subpoena: Three days after filing, the plaintiff asked for permission to subpoena internet providers before the usual discovery conference. Magistrate Judge Trader granted that request on July 30, 2026, about six weeks after the case was filed. That order is what allows providers to send letters to account holders.
- Scheduling: The Rule 16 scheduling conference was continued to December 16, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. Hawaii time, before Magistrate Judge Trader.
- One Doe dismissed: On September 17, 2026, the plaintiff filed a notice voluntarily dismissing one Doe defendant (Doe 7) with prejudice. The docket does not say why.
- Consent judgment: The docket shows a consent judgment (ECF 14) entered on October 30, 2026. We have not reviewed that document’s terms, so we do not describe who it covers, what it says, or whether it resolves the whole case. See the note on consent judgments below.
1:26-cv-00567 and 1:26-cv-00568 (both filed October 30, 2026)
- Judges: 1:26-cv-00567 is currently assigned to Magistrate Judge Wes Reber Porter. 1:26-cv-00568 is assigned to Chief Judge Derrick K. Watson, with Magistrate Judge Wes Reber Porter handling pretrial matters. The court entered an order setting a Rule 16 conference in 1:26-cv-00568 on November 2, 2026.
- What the complaint alleges: The 1:26-cv-00567 complaint claims direct and contributory copyright infringement of one film, Obsession. It alleges that the Does used the YTS website to download or stream the film, that a monitoring company (Maverickeye UG) logged the IP addresses, and that each Doe first received at least one DMCA notice through their provider.
- Willfulness and service requests: The complaint alleges the infringement was “willful” and asks the court, among other things, to order providers to stop serving the accounts involved. These are allegations and requests, not findings.
Patterns worth knowing
- All three Obsession Movie Production lawsuits so far are in one court, the District of Hawaii, and are filed by the same counsel.
- Each case groups many Does together (28 to 31 per case), each identified only by IP address. That is typical of Obsession Movie Production lawsuits and of other film-company BitTorrent cases.
- Two providers. Every IP address in the three exhibits is assigned to either Spectrum (54 of 89) or Hawaiian Telcom (35 of 89).
- Mostly Oahu, but statewide. Honolulu appears most often (40 of 89 rows), followed by ‘Ewa Beach, Kapolei, Pearl City and Kaneohe. The exhibits also list cities on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, including Wailuku, Lahaina, Makawao, Kihei, Lihue, Kapaa, Kalaheo, Kea‘au and Pahoa.
- One work per Doe. Each exhibit lists only one title, Obsession, for every IP address.
- Repeat IP addresses. 23 of the 28 IP addresses in 1:26-cv-00568 also appear in Exhibit 1 to 1:26-cv-00313, with the same hit dates. One of them, 72.234.112.100, was Doe 7 in 1:26-cv-00313, the Doe the plaintiff voluntarily dismissed with prejudice on September 17, 2026; the same IP address is listed as Doe 23 in 1:26-cv-00568. If your IP address appears in both cases, mention that when you speak with an attorney.
- If the two newer cases follow the path of 1:26-cv-00313, an early-subpoena request and provider letters would be the next steps. Use the dates in your own letter, because each court and provider sets its own timeline.
A note on consent judgments in Obsession Movie Production lawsuits
Because a consent judgment now appears on the docket in 1:26-cv-00313, we want to share some general information about what that kind of judgment can mean for a person in a BitTorrent copyright case.
Commentary from Antonelli Law®: think carefully before agreeing to a consent judgment
This is general information, not legal advice, and reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship. If you are facing an Obsession Movie Production Inc. lawsuit, received an ISP letter about this plaintiff, or have been offered a proposed consent judgment, please speak with an experienced copyright-defense attorney about your own particular facts and circumstances.
Generally speaking, it is not advisable to enter into a consent judgment in a copyright infringement case of this kind. A consent judgment is a court order entered with both sides’ agreement, and it often includes a finding or an admission that copyright infringement occurred.
That judgment can follow you. If the same person later faces another copyright allegation involving a different movie download, the plaintiff in the later case can use the earlier consent judgment to argue that the new conduct was willful, because the person had already been through a copyright case and had a judgment entered against them.
A finding of willfulness matters. Under federal copyright law (17 U.S.C. § 504(c)), statutory damages ordinarily top out at $30,000 per work, but a court that finds willful infringement may award up to $150,000 per work.
Whether that happens in any particular case depends on the documents, the facts and the court. That decision should be made with an attorney who has reviewed your situation, not from an article alone. There are often other ways to resolve these matters, such as a confidential settlement, and an attorney can explain which options fit your circumstances.
Your options in Obsession Movie Production lawsuits
| Option | What it involves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Confidential settlement | Resolved through your attorney, using your IP address as the identifier, so your name stays off the public court record | Most people who want a private resolution |
| Totally anonymous settlement | No name, address or financial information is shared with the movie company or its attorneys | People who want the highest level of privacy |
| Motion to quash | A written filing asking the court to cancel or limit the subpoena | Cases with a real legal or procedural defect in the subpoena |
| Defending the case in court | Full defense through discovery, motions and, if needed, trial | People with strong evidence they did not download the film |
Any settlement amount depends on the facts, including the number of works alleged, your circumstances and the strength of the evidence. In Obsession Movie Production lawsuits, as in other cases we handle, our legal fee is a flat fee, separate from any settlement payment, and is confirmed in writing before any work begins. More on how costs work is in our settlement cost guide, and on subpoena challenges in our motion to quash guide.
Do I have to go to court?
Court appearances are rarely necessary in BitTorrent copyright matters like Obsession Movie Production lawsuits. That is not a guarantee for any one case, and Antonelli Law® also defends clients in court when that is needed or is the better path.

- Read every page. Note the docket number, the court, the IP address and the date in the letter.
- Keep every document as it is. Do not delete files, wipe devices or uninstall software.
- Do not contact the plaintiff or its attorneys yourself. Let a lawyer handle any communication.
- Do not sign a proposed consent judgment or file anything in court on your own without advice. A filing you make yourself can put your name in the public record.

Client review of Melissa Ross
“Woking with Melissa was fantastic. She was really effective in communicating with me in layman terms; translating legalize, explaining the process and making me feel I was in really good hands. She was always reachable and extremely prompt in communicating the back and forth between opposing counsel. I couldn’t have asked for more from Melissa. Because of the time zone, I was catching her late in her evenings and she always responded – THANK YOU. Sometimes you get lucky with the initial interview process, and I certainly did.”
