Strike 3 Holdings Filed a Mid-August Wave — ISP Notices Hit in September
California and Texas took most of the new cases.
Strike 3 Holdings is still filing. A mid-August rush of Strike 3 Holdings vs. John Doe copyright cases shows the same model: batch filings, district by district, against Internet subscribers identified only by their IP address.
If your provider sent a letter this month, the complaint was likely filed between August 13 and August 24.
The part that matters for readers right now is timing. Strike 3 files the lawsuit first. The ISP letter usually arrives two to six weeks later. A complaint filed in mid-August is why September is when the envelopes show up.
Torrent Defenders® tracks these filings so people who get an ISP subpoena notice can see what is actually happening in federal court — not what an anonymous internet forum claims is happening.
What to do in the first 48 hours
What to do if a September letter just arrived?
- Do not ignore it. Default is how names and money judgments get on the public docket.
- Do not call Strike 3 or their local counsel yourself. You cannot un-say what you tell them.
- Do not file a pro se paper that puts your name on the case. That is how anonymity disappears.
- Preserve the ISP letter and the case number. You will need both on a consult.
- Get advice while the ISP still has not produced your name. That is the leverage window.
Antonelli Law has defended people against copyright-infringement claims since 2010 — including more than 2,500 clients facing Strike 3 Holdings, and more than 5,000 clients overall against 50+ copyright holders. That work includes software companies such as Ansys and Siemens, movie companies, record companies, and pay-per-view matters including Joe Hand Promotions.
We do not represent the copyright holders. We represent the people they sue.
What the mid-August filing dump shows
The filings we reviewed covers new Strike 3 Holdings cases clustered between August 13 and August 24, 2026. It is not a slow drip of one lawsuit a day. Local counsel dumped stacks of nearly identical complaints on the same dates in the same courts.
| Filing dates | Court | What we saw |
|---|---|---|
| Aug. 13 | E.D. Pennsylvania | 10 cases in one day |
| Aug. 14 | M.D. Pennsylvania | 3 cases |
| Aug. 17–18 | N.D. Ohio and S.D. Texas | Ohio cluster, plus 16 S.D. Texas cases on Aug. 18 |
| Aug. 19 | N.D. California, N.D. Texas, W.D. Texas, E.D. Wisconsin | Texas added another 17 cases that day |
| Aug. 20–21 | C.D. California and E.D. California | Heavy Southern California days |
| Aug. 24 | C.D. California (Riverside and Santa Ana), E.D. Virginia, Tennessee | 8 E.D. Virginia cases in one day |
- Central District of California — about 40 cases across Los Angeles, Riverside, and Santa Ana
- Texas combined — about 33 cases (S.D. Tex. 16, N.D. Tex. 9, W.D. Tex. 8)
- Eastern District of California — 8 cases, all on August 20
- Eastern District of Pennsylvania — 10 cases
- Eastern District of Virginia — 8 cases, all on August 24
Smaller hits appeared in Northern District of California, Northern and Southern District of Ohio, Middle District of Pennsylvania, Middle and Western District of Tennessee, and Eastern District of Wisconsin.
If you live in those districts and just received a letter from Spectrum, AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, or another ISP, this wave is the most likely explanation.
Why September is the ISP Notice Month
Strike 3 does not serve with a Summons and Complaint on their first filing day in court. The sequence is:
- File a John Doe complaint referencing the IP address
- Ask the judge for leave to subpoena the ISP
- Serve the Subpoena on the provider (“Who was the Subscriber assigned IP address 99.999.999.9 on 02-02-2026 at 16:52:14 GMT ?”)
- The ISP notifies you, the Internet account Subscriber
That last step is the letter in your mailbox. In a mid-August filing wave, that letter often lands in September. The letter usually gives you a short window — often about 20 to 30 days — before the ISP turns over the account name and address.
That window is the point of the letter. It is also the point where early legal advice still has the most effect.
The playbook has not changed
Every case in this dump looks the same on the docket:
- Plaintiff: Strike 3 Holdings, LLC
- Defendant: John Doe / Doe subscriber assigned an IP address
- Nature of suit: 820 (copyright)
- No named person at filing
- No dismissal or settlement on the docket yet
Strike 3 files the copyright infringement lawsuit against a John Doe referencing the IP address, asks the court for permission to subpoena the internet provider (Comcast, Verizon, etc.), sends the Subpoena to your ISP (Internet company) to reveal your name and address as the Subscriber, the ISP sends you a letter notifying you it received the court-ordered Subpoena from Strike 3 Holdings. At that point, no defendant’s name is added to the public record.
An IP address only identifies a connection. It does not automatically identify the person who used BitTorrent. Roommates, family members, guests, prior occupants, and open Wi-Fi still matter.

Central District of California is Splitting the Pile
This wave did not dump every California case on downtown Los Angeles. Strike 3 used three C.D. Cal. divisions:
- Western Division (Los Angeles, prefix 02)
- Eastern Division (Riverside, prefix 05)
- Southern Division (Santa Ana, prefix 08)
Decoding Your Central District of California Case: The Prefix Tells the Location (“Division”)
Most people refer to all of LA County as “Los Angeles”. But if a lawyer or judge says a federal court case is in Los Angeles, they probably mean the Western Division of the Central District of California which is located in the Civic Center district of downtown Los Angeles. But not necessarily. Read on to be sure where your case is located.
In the United States District Court for the Central District of California, cases are filed in several different court locations corresponding to different Divisions of the Central District of California.
The information below may help you identify which court location your case is located. Before you travel to the courthouse, call the Clerk’s Office at tel: (213) 894-1565 to be sure the case was not reassigned to a different judge and courtroom location!
To identify the Division, refer to the prefix of the case number, which in the following examples are in blue.

Historical Note on the Role of the Central District of California in Taking Down America’s Most Notorious Copyright Troll Attorneys: Prenda Law
Federal District Judge Otis D. Wright II’s courtroom 5D is located at the Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez United States Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. Judge Wright, a former Marine, is rightfully credited with instigating the takedown of America’s most notorious copyright troll attorneys John Steele, Paul Hansmeier and Paul Duffy (deceased) of the now-defunct Prenda law firm.
Federal prosecutors claimed that John Steele and Paul Hansmeier created a “honeypot” trap for Internet users looking for adult movies online. According to the American Bar Association, the indictments alleged that the lawyers created fake businesses to acquire copyrights in pornographic films, some of which they filmed themselves, and posted those films to torrent (file-sharing) websites including Pirate Bay.
John Steele pled guilty in 2017 to federal conspiracy charges of money laundering, mail fraud and wire fraud. Paul Hansmeier pled guilty in 2018 to two charges related to wire fraud and money laundering. In 2021, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a $1.5 Million restitution order against Paul Hansmeier,
But it is questionable whether any of that would have happened without Judge Wright.
In his now-famous Order, Judge Wright sanctioned those lawyers and made referrals to various bar and federal law enforcement authorities in what became known as The Star Trek Order for its language peppered with Star Trek references. In a case that began as BitTorrent copyright infringement lawsuit, the court turned its attention to the lawyers who filed it.
"[T]hough Plaintiffs boldly probe the outskirts of law, the only
enterprise they resemble is RICO. The federal agency eleven decks up
is familiar with their prime directive and will gladly refit them for
their next voyage. The Court will refer this matter to the United States
Attorney for the Central District of California. The [Court] will also
refer this matter to the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal
Revenue Service."
Strike 3 Holdings and Its Lawyers Say They Are the “Anti-Prenda”
In 2017, Strike 3 Holdings made news. Not for the adult content itself, but because a “BigLaw” corporate law firm with hundreds of attorneys agreed to represent it. Strike 3 Holdings is no longer represented by that BigLaw firm called Fox Rothschild, but the firm’s then-partner Lincoln Bandlow had the relationship with Strike 3 Holdings. Attorney Bandlow continues to represent the company in its California federal court lawsuit filings in his own law firm called Bandlow Law.
Strike 3 Holdings began filing it BitTorrent copyright infringement lawsuits, put a great deal of effort to distinguish themselves from Prenda Law and its criminal activity.
This is what their lawyers said about Prenda Law back then, according to an American Bar Association article:
“To be clear to the court, plaintiff must address the elephant in the room, and that elephant’s name is Prenda,” Fox Rothschild said. “That was a big, dumb, malicious animal from years ago that unfortunately now poses the risk of trampling the rights of all the legitimate content creators, such as plaintiff, who have been forced to seek court intervention to address the tidal wave of internet infringement that puts content creators at risk of drowning in a sea of theft. The court should rest assured: plaintiff and its counsel are the anti-Prenda.”

“Great Experience with Antonelli
I hired Jeffrey Antonelli for a copyright infringement issue (Strike3) in Massachusetts. It was a very good decision. He has dealt with many such cases and immediately put me at ease. “This experience was one of the most stressful experiences I have ever dealt with. Mostly because it came out of no where and I have never been in trouble with the law like this before. From the beginning, Mr. Sanders was so nice and calming. I know he stayed on the phone with longer than he had to j.”

Melissa Ross
“Woking with Melissa was fantastic. She was really effective in communicating with me in layman terms; translating legalize, explaining the process and making me feel I was in really good hands. She was always reachable and extremely prompt in communicating the back and forth between opposing counsel. I couldn’t have asked for more from Melissa. Because of the time zone, I was catching her late in her evenings and she always responded – THANK YOU. Sometimes you get lucky with the initial interview process, and I certainly did.”
